Ingredients
Scale
For the apple pie:
- 2 unbaked pie crusts
- 6 medium Granny Smith apples
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 large egg white, lightly beaten
For the topping:
- 1 unbaked pie crust
- 1 large egg white, lightly beaten
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon sugar
Instructions
To prepare the pie:
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
- On a flat surface, roll out the two pie crusts. Carefully place the first crust into a 9-inch pie plate.
- Peel, core and slice the apples. In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with the sugar, flour and cinnamon. Pour the seasoned apple slices into the unbaked pie crust. Dot with butter.
- Cover the pie filling with the second pie crust. Seal and flute the edges of the crust. Brush the top crust with the egg white, then cut slits into the crust.
To prepare the topping:
- Roll the third pie crust to 1/8th-inch thick. Using a 1/2-inch star cookie cutter, cut 20 stars from the crust. Place the stars around the rim of the crust, brushing each with the egg white.
- In a small bowl, combine the cinnamon and sugar. Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the crust.
- Bake the pie until it is golden brown and the apples are tender, about 30 minutes.
